Current and Original Owners Come Together to Celebrate History at the 1940’s-themed Event and Giveaway an iPad
(CHICAGO, IL) – Boasting one of the oldest liquor licenses in Chicago (number 28, to be exact), River Shannon is one of the most enduring neighborhood pubs in Chicago, and the oldest Irish Pub, still in operation in the city. Situated in a tightly knit Lincoln Park community at 425 West Armitage, River Shannon will be celebrating its 65th year of hospitality service in Chicago on Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 6pm to 3am.
Open to the public, this event will be a celebration of past and present, featuring members of The Cloherty family, the original owners of River Shannon, live entertainment, a sampling of some of River Shannon’s present day food and classic 1940’s cocktails featuring $5 Yes vodka Martinis and $5 Jim Bean Manhattans.
Patrons and staff are encouraged to dress in 1940’s attire as a tribute to the opening era, and the person best representing the times, will win a modern day iPad. Members of the current owners, The McKeaney Family, along with some members of the original owner’s, The Cloherty Family, will recreate the opening day photo, seen here. Marjorie Cloherty Blanz was just a small child when her paternal grandparents, Sally and Patrick Cloherty and her father, John Cloherty, opened the bar. Her grandparents had just returned from a trip to Ireland and brought home water from the River Shannon to Christen the tavern. The tavern will once again be Christened with another bottle of water from the River Shannon, as well, this year, complete with a Champagne toast.

The walk down memory lane and celebration begins on Saturday, August 13 at 6pm. The families will attend, reminisce, share stories and re-Christen the bar at 7pm and celebrate thorough the event. The iPad for Best 1940’s Dressed will be given away at 10pm. Come in and celebrate the history at River Shannon’s 65th Anniversary, in 1940’s style!
